The Pappy Boyington Memorial Fund
The Pappy Boyington Memorial Fund was created to honor and preserve the legacy of Lieutenant Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, a Medal of Honor recipient.
The memorial fund was established with the initial goal of raising funds for the creation an 8-foot bronze statue of Pappy, and also to serve as a source of financial assistance for Veterans in the community. The Pappy Boyington Memorial Fund is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, and donations are tax deductible.
Pappy Boyington was a Marine Corps Aviator in WWII, and was the leader of the renowned Black Sheep Squadron VMF-214. He earned the ACE designation five times, for his cumulative victories against the Japanese as both a Marine and a member of the Flying Tigers in China. His aerial exploits were widely reported during the war, and towards the end of his second combat tour with the Black Sheep, he was shot down over the Pacific. He was captured and held prisoner by the Japanese for 20 months. His survival was not made public until the end of WWII, when liberated POWs returned to the U.S. He was awarded the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
He was born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on December 4, 1912. Recently, the community efforts led to the addition of his name to the local airport as a commemoration. The bronze statue project is in progress, and will be set at the Coeur d’Alene Airport/Pappy Boyington Field.
Please consider a tax-deductible donation to honor his legacy with the completion of the Pappy Boyington statue. |
